Jumpstart your job search with 5 easy tips
Posted by FFAWN on May 3, 2008 10:56 AM
Are you looking to go back to work, but don't know how to start your job search? Check out this article from ThirdAge.com by Dawn Anfuso that gives five tips on going back to the workforce. It addresses the question for someone who has switched jobs a lot, which I think is pretty common these days.

I would also reemphasize the last point in the article: don't ever apologize for the time you took off (raising kids, taking care of parents, etc.). Be confident in the choices you make!

Has anyone else recently jumped back in to the workplace after taking time off? If so, we'd love to hear about any tips you have for other readers. Feel free to comment below. Thanks!

Handy tools from iVillage help parents (and non-parents!) plan their lives, track their children, and swap for healthy foods
Posted by FFAWN on May 2, 2008 5:33 PM
Want some help coming up with healthy swaps for the unhealthy snacks that your kids usually want? Check out the handy "snack swapper" that the people over at iVillage have created. Simply select the unhealthy snack item (brownies, cheese puffs, etc) and it spits out a healthy alternative (like fudge pops or cheese rice cakes). Go ahead and use it for yourself, too (I did!).

Be sure to also check out iVillage's other nifty tools such as the Family Activity Calendar and the Development Tracker (for you to track the progress of your kids-- newborn through twelfth grade).

Do we buy "stuff" to make ourselves feel better?
Posted by FFAWN on May 1, 2008 11:19 AM
Check out this article I found at dailygalaxy.com (from Digg) titled "The Consumer Paradox: Scientists Find that Low Self-Esteem and Materialsim Goes Hand in Hand".

(Note: there is some foul language in a Fight Club quotation.)

Scientists found that even a small step to raise a person's self-esteem can dramatically decrease your materialism, providing a way to cope with insecurity. The article also talks about adolescents and how materialism is a way to cope with low self-esteem.

So tell us: have you ever bought something to make yourself feel better about yourself? Did it work? Did that feeling last, or did you regret spending the money?
