Should you go back to school?
Posted by FFAWN on May 7, 2008 10:12 AM
Do you feel like you're stuck in your job and want to move forward? Maybe you just want to learn some new stuff, so you can use it at the office. Or perhaps you want to take a computer class to make your life easier day-to-day. Whatever it is, if you're thinking about going back to school, here is a list of things to think about as you make your decision to go back to school, thanks to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP, at www.iaap-hq.org).

Are any of you currently in school? What sort of issues do you deal with, in order to balance everything (school, work, family, personal life...)? Let us know by commenting below.

I'm in school and I rely on a quick workout every day to keep me sane... but it's hard to get out there some days!

While working in recruitment, I noticed that people who studied as an adult or combined part time work with study, advanced very quickly and got better jobs. I do think it's very important though that you have a good idea of what you want, and make sure you are doing it for the right reasons, so that you can stay motivated through your study.
If you are studying because you feel you should, or taking a subject that someone else thinks is a good idea, you are less likely to commit as fully than if it is about achieving a dream, even if that's long term.
I believe in America that most Colleges have Career Professionals that can talk you through your interests and give you tools to help you decide what you really want to do.

I'm a medical student and my supportive family which includes my husband, mom and dad keep me grounded, and they also help me with my studies. when I complete school I will look back and smile on those days everyone took turns with the infamous flash cards. I know without them it would be tough and without GOD it would be impossible.

while attending online classes, and working partime. Life does not wait for no one. Every morning I wake up thankful that there is something positive and life grooming that I am doing. A couple of years ago my mind was unclear of what to do with my life. But through a whole lot of prayer God showed me what my purpose is here on earth. On the days when I just dont really feel like doing anything, my mind wanders to all of the people my life will touch by the words God will give me to teach. Although marriage has not come my way as of yet, my siblings, and the rest of the my family, and friends are very demanding. They are giving me first hand experience of what is to come in my future.

I went back to school this summer. Now I'm worried that my son is going to miss out on some sports because I had to take an evening class. I feel like a bad mom should i drop the class and take it in the fall ?

Dominica, it is such a good thing for your son to see that you're furthering your education. My mother went back to school in her 50's. My siblings and I knew the importance of education, but never really took the advantage of going. Once my mother went, we saw how her life had begun to change so we all started to put everything else in its proper place, with school being first. Maybe speak with your son and tell him that education will open doors for him to be able to not just play sports, but have a corporate position in the field of sports. Just my little 2 cents. God Bless!

Four years ago, I enrolled in an accelerated degree program. I completed the program but did not have enough funds to cover my tuition. I have been trying to find avenues to help me with my situation. I did not receive sufficient financial aid and was told that after the program was completed, I could not reapply. I am 44 years old and had dreams of becoming a teacher. I would greatly appreciate any information on how to obtain funds for my tuition bill.

I am a thirty year old mother of three beautiful children, who has been to hell and back over the last fourteen years. I am also a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for the last five years. i decided within those five years that I was ready to clean up my life and move on, and started with the divorce of my abusive ex husband. I have been and out of the wrong relationships searching for love, but found out that I only needed needed to love me first. I am currently attending college to obtain my Associate in Applied Science in Medical Assisting Technology. I will graduate next fall. I am also a model student, a Admin. Assist. at an agency that provides community support for mental health and substance abuse clients. I juggle my college career, work, and the kids activities daily. If has been really tough this semester because of the cost of gas. Single mothers juggle alot of things all of the time. My plans for the future are to one day become a Physician's Assistant and attend Duke University or Wake Forest University here in NC. I will obtain my goals and along the way raise three strong individuals who endured the struggles that I have gone through.
