But how do we encourage our children to have high self-esteem and to be confident in themselves? This article from KidsHealth.org gives some great (and easy!) suggestions on fostering self-esteem in your little one.

Do we buy "stuff" to make ourselves feel better?
Posted by FFAWN on May 1, 2008 11:19 AM
Check out this article I found at dailygalaxy.com (from Digg) titled "The Consumer Paradox: Scientists Find that Low Self-Esteem and Materialsim Goes Hand in Hand".

(Note: there is some foul language in a Fight Club quotation.)

Scientists found that even a small step to raise a person's self-esteem can dramatically decrease your materialism, providing a way to cope with insecurity. The article also talks about adolescents and how materialism is a way to cope with low self-esteem.

So tell us: have you ever bought something to make yourself feel better about yourself? Did it work? Did that feeling last, or did you regret spending the money?
